Help! How do I take out a tampon?

About five hours ago I put in a tampon and I can't get it out. I know that if it's too dry it hurts so I tried wetting it with water. My period is still a medium flow I think. When I was lying down it started to leak though. When I pull on the string it really hurts but I got almost all of the string out, it's the tampon itself. This is my first time using a tampon. Could I get TTS from this? (I'm not totally sure what TTS is but I think you get it from having a tampon in too long)
