Anybody familiar with Harlem Renaissance or Fats Waller?

I need help with knowing what makes Fats Waller stand out and different from any other musician during the Harlem Renaissance. How did he impact music then to now or helped African Americans. I know how to get the biography of his life and all, but I just need to know what made different from the average musician of his time. It's for a report.
