Is harlem really that bad?

I live in NY and was thinking of moving to Harlem, but I have heard a lot of bad things about it. There are some good prices on houses there and apartments but I don't want to move anywhere where i will get killed or something. Is Harlem really that dangerous and should I stay away or is it not as bad as most say it is? Anybody live there?
