Why did they laugh at me?

I was in a free with my friends and they were talking about the ghetto. So I was wondering where in New York there was a ghetto and I asked. All the did was laugh a whole lot and walk away without saying anything. One of my friends lives in a ghetto in harlem so I'm not oblivious to less fortunate neightborhoods. Can someone tell me why this happened?
